ROGER OAKLAND’S “FAITH UNDONE” REVIEWED BY GARY GILLEY
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Dec 16, 2007 in AM Missives, Brian McLaren, Current Issues, Emergent Church, Erwin McManus
The back cover of Faith Undone by Roger Oakland asks:
Is the emerging church movement just another passing fad, a more contemporary approach to church, or the discontent grumblings of young people looking for answers? In fact it is much broader and is influencing Christianity to a significant degree. Grounded in a centuries-old mystical approach, this movement is powerful yet highly deceptive, and it draws its energy from practices and experiences that are foreign to biblical Christianity.
The path the emerging church is taking is leading right into the arms of an interfaith perspective that has prophetically profound ramifications. It is indeed a new way of being Christians, and in every conceivable manner, it is striving to bring about a new reformation. Without a doubt, it will have an impact on all churches in the Western world and far beyond. For behind this new kind of church is a well-designed strategy and maneuver by the prince of this world, the enemy of our souls, to literally take apart the faith of millions—it will be nothing less than faith undone.
Dr. Gary Gilley of Southern View Chapel begins his look at Oakland’s book about the emerging church by informing us that:
Roger Oakland has provided for God’s people a needed and valuable exposé of the emergent church movement. This is the most complete and up-to-date treatment of this complex and rapidly changing “conversation” (as adherents like to call it).
Faith Undone is extremely valuable on many fronts: First, we are given the history and roots of the movement. While officially of recent vintage, the roots go back many years to people like Peter Drucker along with Bob Buford and his Leadership Network.
You can read Gilley’s full review of Roger Oakland’s book, which exposes—among other things—the neo-liberalism of the emerging church here.
