REGENERATION PRECEDES FAITH

Apprising Ministries brings to your attention that there are a number of Christian teachers and ministers who claim to be Reformed and/or Calvinist who are also part of the emerging church movement. However, the Emergent Church, which began with Leadership Network’s Terranova Project assembled by Doug Pagitt circa 1997, is heavily Arminian, semi-pelagian, and preaches a “missional” gospel of synergism.

As you will clearly see below this is the antithesis of Reformed theology, which teaches monergism (salvation is an act of God alone i.e. soli Deo gloria) and that regeneration precedes faith. Whether one agrees with this or not is irrelevant to this point: If this is true then the whole of the postevangelical and emerging church, which teaches synergism (man co-operates with God in salvation), is preaching a different gospel than Reformed theology and/or Calvinism.

In his article Regeneration Precedes Faith referenced below Dr. R. C. Sproul tells us:

One of the most dramatic moments in my life for the shaping of my theology took place in a seminary classroom. One of my professors went to the blackboard and wrote these words in bold letters: “Regeneration Precedes Faith.”

These words were a shock to my system. I had entered seminary believing that the key work of man to effect rebirth was faith. I thought that we first had to believe in Christ in order to be born again. I use the words in order here for a reason. I was thinking in terms of steps that must be taken in a certain sequence. I had put faith at the beginning. The order looked something like this:

“Faith—rebirth—justification.”

I hadn’t thought that matter through very carefully. Nor had I listened carefully to Jesus’ words to Nicodemus… (Online source)
