TONY CAMPOLO TO ENLIGHTEN SOUTHERN BAPTISTS IN VIRGINIA
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Oct 2, 2008 in Current Issues, Southern Baptist Convention
Emergent Evangelical Prophet Tony Campolo is going to be bringing his neo-Gnostic wisdom that he supposedly gleaned from his practice of corrupt Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism (CSM) along with the reimagined social gospel of the Emerging Church to enlighten Southern Baptists in Virginia.
You see Campolo, a “Progressive Evangelical” [read: postliberal], is featured speaker at the upcoming Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV) “185th Annual Meeting of the BGAV” on November 11-12. (Online source) For those who may not know the BGAV is still listed among the State conventions of the national Southern Baptist Convention itself:

The website link listed above brings you to the Virginia Baptist Mission Board (VBMB). Regular readers of Apprising Ministries are aware that I have written much lately concerning the Emerging rebellion against Sola Scriptura going on within the Christian Church today. Unless you have recently arrived here from another planet you should already know that Tony Campolo is one of the heroes of Emergent ecumenicism and its repudiation of the final authority of God’s Word.
As I have begun to cover in Tony Campolo: “Christian Mysticism” Trumps The Bible the sufficiency of Scripure isn’t enough for these know-it-all spiritual thirteen-year-olds so intead they crave the spiritual “high” of subjective mystic experiences caused by this spurious CSM. AM has also been attempting to point out to the few who even pay attention anymore that this sordid CSM, which flowered in the antibiblical monastic traditions of apostate Roman Catholicism, has already been poisoning evangelical seminaries for years now through so-called Spiritual Formation as promulgated by Living Spiritual Teacher and Quaker mystic Richard Foster—along with his friend and spiritual twin Dallas Willard.
The fact is that CSM has even taken firm root within entire State Conventions of the pretending to be “Protestant” Southern Baptist Convention e.g. the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina as shown in Apostasy, Contmeplative Spirituality/Mysticism (CSM) in the SBC and Disease in the Church as well as in Georgia Baptist Convention (SBC) Now Promoting the Cult of Richard Foster. O, but what does all of that have to do with Tony Campolo enlightening Southern Baptists in Virginia? Hey, that’s a good question; so, let me show you.
Remember that VBMB website I mentioned earlier? Suppose you were one like me who’s been studying the spread of CSM through what I’ve come to call The Cult Of Richard Foster. And why do I use language like that; well, if Foster creates a neo-pietism where he says do certain ascetic extrabiblical so-called “disciplines,” many of which were once practiced by apostate Roman Catholic monks and monkettes rejected by God in the Reformation, and now even “Protestant” evangelicals will do so, let’s just say I wouldn’t recommend following any of his suggestions for beverages; say like *cough* “flavored” kool-aid.
But suppose like me you were intrigued by the Spiritual Needs button on the front page of the VBMB website so you click on it and then you notice Spiritual Guidance. Then you say: If I was a betting man I’d wager a search for “Richard Foster” will turn up favorable materials about him from this “Protestant” website. Sure enough under Resources for Christian Growth we find Foster’s Celebration of Discipline, which my friend Dr. Gary Gilley rightly called “an encyclopedia of theological error.”
And the Recommended Reading section features a number of questionable sources not the least of which are the late Spiritual Master and Roman Catholic monk M. Basil Pennington, Linda Graybeal (Richard Foster’s personal assistant), SBC minister and mystic Dallas Willard, Emergent Church theologian Leonard Sweet, quasi-New Age Christian Ken Blanchard, and Emerging Church pastor Dan Kimball. Then at the bottom of the page under “Emergent Culture Recommended Reading” we find a whole who’s who of the Emergent postliberal cult and its rebellion against God’s Word such as Rob Bell, Spencer Burke, Shane Claiborne, Alan Jones, Tony Jones, Brian McLaren, and Doug Pagitt.
So should we be surprised that VBMB/BGAV is having Tony Campolo in to scratch their itching ears; nope. You see, the Lord made His point, to borrow from that great pop philosopher Don McLean, a long, long time ago —Do two men walk together unless they have made an appointment? (Amos 3:3)
