PHYLLIS TICKLE: TICKLING ITCHING EMERGENT EARS
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Nov 18, 2008 in AM Missives, Current Issues, Emergent Church, Features
Below you’ll see religious writer Phyllis Tickle hawking her latest book The Great Emergence (TGE), which is published by Baker Books. Going onto their website as of this writing it’s pretty hard to miss Tickle’s book. Well, there’s really a little more to the story.
For you see, TGE is actually from Baker’s Emersion: Emergent Village resources for communities of faith line, which is from their partnership with Emergent Village. So those of us born yesterday will know it’s completely unbiased “research.”
And wouldn’t you know it, over at the website Emersion Books we notice among those on the “Emersion team” Emergent Church pastor Doug Pagitt, familiar quasi-universalist teacher of a counterfeit Christianity who not so long ago hung out with Dalai Lama along with his friend Rob Bell.
O well; who knows, maybe there was a stimulating discussion of the integral theory of spiral dynamics for the coming Global Family to be had:
Welcome to a behind-the-scenes look at the Emersion team—Doug Pagitt, Carla Barnhill, Tim Conder, Chad Allen, and myself, Brooke Nolen—at work. The team recently met in Minneapolis, Minnesota where Doug Pagitt hosted the meeting at Solomon’s Porch, a unique church community that he leads. On Sunday evening, I experienced firsthand Doug spinning around on a stool, barefoot in a room full of believers and seekers, while encouraging attendees to interact with his message. (Online source)
Now the subtitle of GTE happens to be “How Christianity is Changing and Why”; and—*Shock Warning* you might want to sit down for this—amazingly enough this new form of Christianity is…well, exactly like the belief system of Emergent Village! I mean who would have ever thought that?! As Apprising Ministries already pointed out in Phyllis Tickle: Emerging Church Dominating Influence Over Protestantism self-proclaimed “progressive Presbymergent” Adam Walker Cleaveland was at the 2006 joint annual meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion.
Presbymergent Cleaveland recalls that this is where Tickle filled us in a bit more concerning her *ahem* emerging theory::
I finally made it to a session, “What is Emergent?” Brian McLaren, Phyllis Tickle and Pete Rollins…led a lively and packed discussion about Emergent and its role in the church and in theological discourse… Phyllis Tickle gave a wonderful introduction to Emergent and its place within the history of Christianity.
She talked about how every 500 years, the church has gone through a dramatic revolution and reformation (1517: Protestant Reformation; 1054: East/West Split; 500…something about popes…I was never great with history). She believes that Emergent is the new movement of reformation for this 500 year period. She also is so bold to say that Brian McLaren is to this new reformation what Martin Luther was to the Protestant Reformation. (Online source, emphasis mine)
Below you’ll also hear Tickle say, “this thing is radically Jesus oriented.” No; what this alleged Emergence is really doing is radically reintertreting Jesus and I, for one, hear the Voice of the Spirit:
For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. (2 Timothy 4:3-4)
Leave them; they are blind guides…
