CHRISTIAN UNIVERSALISM AFFIRMS SALVATION BY JESUS
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Dec 13, 2008 in Current Issues, Emergent Church, Features, Rob Bell
The Emergent rebellion against Sola Scriptura continues gaining strength and because evangelicalism only pays it lip service anyway subjective “experiences” with “God” will very quickly become the norm. You will continue to see leaders in the Emerging Church come out of the closet in their support of practicing homosexuals being accepted as Christians as Tony Jones already has.
You will also see some finallly openly declaring their adherance to Christian Universalism, which is likely where Jones’ own pastor Doug Pagitt is, and possibly his friend Rob Bell. But don’t be fooled; note very carefully this is a “Christian” Universalism (CU) and it is different than Universalism, which sees all men saved irregardless of Jesus Christ. This supposed CU does see Hell (if one believes it to be literal) emptied eventually, but in CU, salvation is based upon a universal atonement by Christ so it does affirm that this Universal Reconciliation comes only through Jesus:
“Christian Universalism” is the position that all of mankind will ultimately be saved through Jesus whether or not faith is professed in him in this life. It claims that God’s qualities of love, sovereignty, justice, etc., require that all people be saved and that eternal punishment is a false doctrine. (Online source, emphasis mine)
