DR. RICHARD MOUW: EVANGELICAL ECUMENISM
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Dec 2, 2008 in Current Issues
Here’s another example ala “Bible Scholar” Rick Warren Is Reversing The Reformation of an evangelical leader, in this case president of Fuller Theological Cesspool Seminary Dr. Richard Mouw, simply declaring the Protestant Reformation over.
In his blog post Evangelical Ecumenicism Mouw muses:
Evangelicals should not have allowed the latitudinarian Protestants to co-opt the label “ecumenical.” We too are—or at least we ought to be—a people who love the whole oikos, the entire household of the faithful. To be sure, we have been justifiably suspicious of the “organizational unity” endeavors of Christians who are fond of inclusivist councils and mergers.
But that merely signals a commitment to a different style of ecumenism, one that emphasizes cooperation in common tasks, such as evangelism and mission. When we think of ecumenism in these terms, Billy Graham is one of the most important ecumenical leaders in the twentieth century! (Online source)
Sadly, Graham was. By “latitudinarian Protestants” Mouw refers to those who refuse to reform their views and won’t conform to other parts of the visible church. And then this professor of philosophy employs a catagory shift by saying intead they should be “a people who love the whole oikos, the entire household of the faithful.”
What he’s done is to paint someone like myself, as former Roman Catholic who holds to the Reformed doctrines of grace, in a negative light inferring that because I – as men like Martin Luther, John Calvin, Charles Spurgeon and John MacArthur before me – refuse to acknowledge the apostate Roman Catholic Church as part of the Body of Christ I don’t love “the entire household of the faithful.”
Well, I say instead how pitiful it is that spiritually spineless men like Mouw who, claims to be a Calvinist, and Billy Graham, a minister with the largest Protestant denomination in America the Southern Baptist Convention, are turning, and long ago turned, their backs on “the entire householf of the faithful” in order to embrace apostates. And the evangelical community sleeps on…
