DECONSTRUCTING THE EMERGING IMAGINATION OF JONATHAN BRINK
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Jul 22, 2010 in Current Issues, Emergence Christianity, Emergent Church, Features
You may recall Jonathan Brink, “Author, Spiritual Formation Coach, and Filmmaker,” from Apprising Ministries posts like Neo-Orthodox Approach To The Bible Perfect Fit For Emergence Christianity and The Emerging Church Shares It’s Love For… Interestingly enough, in the latter post I told you how I’d noticed that heretical Emerging Church leader Doug Pagitt, the quasi-universalist pastor of the church where equally heretical Tony Jones is “theologian in residence,” had tweeted:
@pagitt Reading: “We Love You Ken Silva”( http://twitthis.com/kmexel ) (Online source)
The link originally took you to Brink’s post We Love You Ken Silva at his old blog; as of this writing it seems it’s still the third most popular post at his new blog Jonathan Brink. Briefly Brink wants us to know that he’s:
an author, coach, speaker, and consultant. I am the author of soon to be published, Discovering the God Imagination. I currently serve as Managing Director for Thrive Ministries, focusing on the missional discipleship process and exploring what it means to really follow Jesus in his mission of restoration and reconciliation. (Online source)
Brink also contributes at the Emergent Village Weblog; as in Here’s My Enthusiasm For Emergent, and from a few days ago, A Time To Reconstruct where he tells us:
Over the last decade, many of us who have participated in what some call “the conversation” have been engaging a deconstruction process of our faith. In many ways this leaving was liberation from an old story. The traditional way of seeing the story in the Gospel just didn’t work anymore. (Online source)
You see in the neo-liberal cult of the Emergent Church, after thoroughly confusing themselves with their “deconstruction process,” they’ve been busy cobbling together reconstructing a new postmodern form of Progressive Christianity, which they now refer to as Emergence Christianity. And, at least as it regards Postmodernism And Truth, the beauty of the false philosophy of postmodernism—which has taken them captive—is that each of them is then free to simply construct their own synthetic version of it; and they’ll all still be right.
Sadly though, in the real world, we call this delusion. At the core of this centered on the self Emerging Church existential rebellion against the final authority of God’s Word in Scripture is a denial of the vicarious penal substitution of Jesus Christ on the Cross for our sins. You know, the Gospel of repentance an forgiveness in Jesus’ Name. Here’s an example from the Amazon page for Discovering The God Imagination: Reconstructing A Whole New Christianity by Jonathan Brink; even the title tips you off as to the to which we’re headed:
What if we’ve misunderstood the Gospel? What if our historical approaches to Christianity have been distorted by the very same problem they are attempting to solve? This groundbreaking book offers a new conversation in which to understand the Gospel, the problem God is solving, and what it means to participate with Jesus in the solution. It unhinges us from our traditional religious perspectives that get bogged down in complexity and paradox, and instead reconstructs a whole, new Christianity. (Online source)
Notice the deconstructing questions; the problem is, I can just as easily turn around and ask: Jonathan, but what if we haven’t misunderstood the Gospel? What if the historic orthodox Christian faith actually deconstructs your own synthetic reality of another religion entirely? In fact, AM special correspondent Daniel Neades has written a post called What if? (Absolute truth), which actually cuts right to the very heart of this matter:
Many people in the Church seem to be asking ‘What if’ questions. Which started me thinking…
What if…there exists a truth
which is absolute?
What if…it is true that
there is a God?
What if…this God made
the heavens and the earth?
What if…He made humankind
in His own image?
What if…the first man and woman
rebelled against God?
What if…they died spiritually and became
by nature
children of God’s wrath?
What if…you are their descendent?
What if…you too
are a rebel
against God?
What if…you,
a child of spiritually dead parents,
are dead in your sins?
What if…God still loved the world?
So much that He sent
His Son,
Jesus?
What if…Jesus calls everyone
to turn away
from their rebellion
and toward God?
What if…Jesus bore
the punishment
for your hatred of God
by dying
on a Roman execution cross?
What if…He proved that
He is God
by raising Himself from the dead?
What if…He is coming back
to judge the living and the dead?
What if…He offers you forgiveness,
and freedom
from your sin?
And His righteousness
put to your account?
What if…instead of slavery to sin,
you could have a life of service
to the One who gave His life for you?
What if…God caused all of these things
to be written in a book?
So that you could know them?
What if…this is absolute truth:
Christ Jesus.
Crucified for sinners.
Raised from the dead.
According to the Scriptures.
What then?
