RICK WARREN AND HERESY
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Jan 3, 2011 in AM Missives, Current Issues, Features, Rick Warren, Southern Baptist Convention
It’s simply an indisputable fact that, even now, a part of its spiritually lurid legacy of the upgraded sinfully ecumenical Emerging Church aka Emergent Church is its fueling the current fad of Protestant evangelicals practicing corrupt Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism (CSM) ala Living Spiritual Teacher and Quaker mystic Richard Foster—and his spiritual twin Dallas Willard.
So a large part of the online apologetics and discernment work being done here at Apprising Ministries has been covering the EC as it’s grown into a full blown neo-liberal cult—an Emerging Church 2.0—now pushing its new form of postmodern Progressive Christianity as “big tent” Emergence Christianity.
That’s why I’ve so often mentioned before that this spurious CSM—a rebirth of Roman Catholic Counter Reformation spirituality—under the quise of Spiritual Formation along with it’s main vehicle of Contemplative/Centering Prayer (CCP)—meditation in an altered state of consciousness—was a core doctrine from the evil inception of the Emerging Church.
You may also recall, from articles like Southern Baptist Soul Shaping Return To Religious Bondage and Saddleback Church, Rick Warren, And Spiritual Disciplines, that for quite some time now Apprising Ministries has been covering the influx of this Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism into the Southern Baptist Convention—allegedly the largest Protestant denomination in the United States.
Now you have the proper context to examine the following tweet from Purpose Driven Pope Rick Warren who defecates on the blood of the Reformers when bragging: “I see absolutely zero reason in separating my fellowship from anybody”[1]; which includes Rick Warren And Roman Catholics:
Really Rick Warren; do tell, what am I overemphasizing when I call you to publicly repent for your acceptance of apostate Roman Catholicism, which clearly has another gospel, as a viable form of Christianity in stark contradiction to Reformation theology you profess to adhere to? I say you are heretical for ignoring other truths such as what Dr. John MacArthur states below:
Once you then sort of try to define that as “common spiritual mission” built on “common spiritual unity” you just take doctrine and throw it out the window, and perception is violated, particularly because the Catholic Church claims to be true Christianity, and when we reverse 450 years of history, and just throw our arms around the Roman system, which I think we have to say, John, in all honesty, is not a group of wayward brothers but is an apostate form of Christianity. It is a false religion, it is another religion. (Online source)
And how about this from Dr. R.C. Sproul, a fellow speaker with Rick Warren at the recently concluded DG 2010 conference Think: The Life of the Mind & the Love of God:
what he [John MacArthur] is saying here, the Catholic Church understood in the 16th century, and Trent and Rome placed its unambiguous anathema on the Protestant doctrine of “Justification by faith alone” and has never, in any magisterial sense removed that anathema.
The Roman Catholic Church condemns “sola fide! (L.)” Now if, please understand this, if “sola fide (L.)” is the gospel, then the Roman Catholic Church has condemned the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, nobody who went to the Council of Trent, as a delegate, went there with the intention of condemning the gospel. The theologians of Rome really believed that they were defending the gospel and that the Protestants had in fact committed apostasy.
And I admire the Church, the Roman communion of the 16th century for at least understanding what apparently people don’t understand today, and that is what is at stake here. That they understood that somebody is under the anathema of God! And we can be as nice, and as pleasant, and as gentle, and as loving, and as charitable, and tolerant as we can possibly be, but it’s not going to change that folks. Somebody is preaching a different gospel!
And when Rome condemned the Protestant declaration of “Justification by faith alone” I believe, Rome, when placing the anathema on “sola fide (L.),” placed the anathema of God upon themselves. I agree with his [John MacArthur] assessment, that the institution [Roman Catholic Church] is apostate! (Online source)
Sadly, squishy man-pleasing evangelicals like Rick Warren won’t even stand for the Gospel itself anymore.
