TRUTH?

This is a repost of an original article on Possessing the Treasure2 καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τὸ πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτόν, ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν. (Luke 22:2 NA27)
2And the Chief Priests and the Scribes were seeking how they might destroy him for they were afraid of the people. (Luke 22:2 a personal translation from the NA27 Greek text)
Even though it is not exactly new, we live in a day when the concept of truth is seen as something that is “relative.” I was listening to Dr. Al Mohler’s ‘The Briefing’ Podcast a couple of days ago in which he read part of an editorial from a major newspaper that was written to defend the intellectual concept of ‘Abortion on demand’ as being right if the mother considered it in her best interest to exercise her ‘right to choose.’ Her “rights’ outweighed those of the unborn baby she was carrying in her womb. On the other hand, the writer of the editorial, a woman, celebrated with her friends who had babies and wept with others who had miscarriages. What was the difference? It was the value placed by the parents and those around them on the “fetus” that gave it “rights” that demanded sacrifice on the part of the woman. If the woman felt like the pregnancy was a burden in any way then an abortion should be the next step. That was her “truth.”
This is open rebellion against what is right and moral and is what Paul spoke of in Romans 1:18-32. We see the same thing with the homosexual rights movement, which seems to be overwhelming our society right now. Here is what Paul said in that passage:
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. 26 For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27 and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. 28 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29 They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. (Romans 1:18-32 ESV)
What is key to that passage? Those under the wrath of God denied his truth and so he gave them over to their passions. There has always been unrighteousness in this fallen world. However, I can remember a time in this country (the U.S.) when it was illegal to have an abortion. It was illegal to be a practicing homosexual. Marriage was understood to be defined as God defined in his Word. Even the ungodly knew this and did not challenge it with success. Now, it seems that something evil has changed. What is it? Has God lifted his hand and begun his judgment? Why is the visible church so powerless to stand firm against these things?
The reason it has no voice to speak against such outrageous evil is that it has become like the world. Within so much of it the gospel has long ago lost its power because it has been diluted by the “Free Grace” nonsense, that is, that salvation is available without repentance. Also, so many in these churches see the gospel and salvation as something more along the lines as something sentimental or as personal act on one’s part that allows a so-called Christian to live any way they want without fear of judgment. That is not based on Biblical truth.
What is the cry when someone stands against this stuff? The accusations begin immediately that we are being unloving and judgmental. Those who say that obviously are ignorant of how Jesus handled those who stood against him and how the Apostles stood against those against them. We must obey God not men.
God’s Word makes it clear that there is truth and that truth is to be found only in God and his Word. In English we have the words “truth” and “true.” Both speak of what is real, what really is, what is factual. It is not opinion, it is not conjecture, and it is not hypothesis or theory. If something is true, it is absolutely reliable, totally secure. It cannot change because to do so would mean it is not true, not reliable.
The New Testament’s original language is Koine Greek. In our English Bibles the word “truth” translates a form of ἀλήθεια, “alētheia.”It means basically the same thing as our English word “truth.” Etymologically ἀλήθεια means “nonconcealment.” This means that is denotes what is seen, indicated, expressed, or disclosed, a thing as it really is, not as it is concealed or falsified. In other words, ἀλήθεια is the real state of affairs.
Carefully read the following passage I translated from Luke 21:37-22:6.
(Luke 21:37–22:6 NA27)
37 Now during the day he was in the Temple teaching, but at evening he would go out and spend the night in the mountain that is called Olivet. 38 And all the people were getting up early to come to him in the Temple to hear him. 1And the Feast of Unleavened Bread was coming near, which is called the Passover. 2And the Chief Priests and the Scribes were seeking how they might destroy him for they were afraid of the people.3 And Satan entered into Judas who was called Iscariot, belonging to the number of the twelve. 4 And having departed, he spoke with the Chief Priests and the Captains of the Temple how he might hand him over to them 5 and they rejoiced and they agreed to pay him money. 6 And he consented, and he was seeking an opportunity to betray him without a crowd with them. (Luke 21:37-22:6 a personal translation from the NA27 Greek text)
Who is doing the concealment? Who wants to do things behind the scenes? Who is in Temple everyday teaching the people telling the truth? Who is concerned about image? Who is concerned about what the people think and do? Our Lord went to the cross voluntarily and what he accomplished there was the atonement and he became our propititiation. His shed blood is what paid that price that enables all God draws to himself to be justified by grace through faith. Yes, all that is truth, but Satan did an evil work in taking over Judas Iscariot who betrayed our Lord. Yes, all that God used to accomplish his will, but Judas is culpable.
My brethren, do you see how those who want to hide the truth in their self-righteousness do not care about doing evil things like arresting Jesus in the middle of the night and condemning him to die in an illegal trial in which it is obvious to everyone that he is in no way guilty of anything?
This is what we see continually within the workings of the evil people in power right now in this country who are bound and determined to make the U.S. just like Western Europe, that is, morally reprehensible in the eyes of God. What is tragic though is the absolute lack of backbone the so-called Christian leadership in the country have in the face of it. Where is the outcry? Where is the moral outrage? Can you see it now my brethren? Has God silenced those so-called Christian leaders by making them pawns in the hands of these evil people by making them “buy into” the lie that it is unloving to offend anyone and condemn sin by calling it sin and calling for repentance?
Let us pray for God to have mercy on the true Church here by either sending us real leaders or by coming soon that we will be with him forever.
Soli Deo Gloria!
