EMERGENCE CHRISTIANITY IKON PETER ROLLINS AND JUDAS SAY HAPPY [Bleep] EASTER

Welcome Into The Emergence Of A New Form Of Christianity That’s Worth Believing?

Mystic philosopher and postmodern [read: postliberal] theologian Peter Rollins is a master ear-tickler and fast rising star in what was basically the Emergent Church; but now this ecumenical, alleged new reformation of Christianity, is morphing into something they call Emergence Christianity. In his book How (Not) To Speak Of God Rollins says they’re “rediscovering the Barthian insight that even the revealed side of God is mysterious.” So Emergence “is thus able to leave aside the need for clarity” (18).

Little wonder because snakes prefer to slither around in the shadows. Of himself Rollins wants us to know that he spends much of his time:

as a writer, public speaker, lecturer and co-ordinator of the experimental collective Ikon.  Together these diverse activities ensure that I have the privilege of engaging in that difficult job of marrying activism with theory, the public square with the academy. (Online source)

The website for Ikon leads us to a Wiki “Main Page” where we’re told Ikon is “iconic, apocalyptic, heretical, emerging, failing” (sounds about right) and:

Inhabiting a space on the outer edges of religious life, we are a Belfast-based collective who offer anarchic experiments in transformance art. Challenging the distinction between theist and atheist, faith and no faith our main gathering employs a cocktail of live music, visual imagery, soundscapes, theatre, ritual and reflection in an attempt to open up the possibility of a theodramatic event. As Apprising Ministries points out in Emergence Pastor Rob Bell To Have Friend Peter Rollins In Conference Rollins is a friend of the Elvis of Emergence Rob Bell, who has even done the foreword for Rollins’ latest book The Orthodox Heretic and Other Impossible Tales. Bell says of Rollins:

“I remember driving around Belfast with Pete, sitting in the front seat listening to him tell these parables that he’d written—thinking, ‘Everybody needs to hear these.’ And now you can.”

—Rob Bell, author of Jesus Wants to Save Christians

In addition Rollins also happens to be a good friend of emerging homosexual “Christian” activist Adele Sakler of Queermergent as well. Today at Rollins’ blog he has an entry entitled Ikon: Judas where he informs us that “Easter Sunday ikon offered a gathering” called “Judas.” Within Rollins provides us with “a small virtual tour of the evening” making sure to include the following concerning this Emergence Easter service — “Warning: the following audio clips contain strong language.”

Yow! And he ain’t just-a kiddin’ either; there’s certainly a liberal amount of profanity including the f-word more than a few times. Rollins tells us that to set the mood:

The room was sparse, with little more than a long table running from one end to the other. At the centre of the table stood a large wooden chair draped with fine purple cloth and covered with wild ivy, ivy that weaved its way around the chair and spread out onto the table. The table itself was laden with fresh bread, olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Black candles slowly burned down the tables narrow centre.

Ambient music filled the room and a large image of two lovers embracing was projected onto one of the walls. The video clip was originally less than a minute long but had been slowed down so that it lasted for the duration of the gathering. The mesmerising visual looked almost like a still image, but as the night progressed the lover’s lips gradually met. (Online source)

Rollins says that next:

After people had bought their drinks from the bar they took their seats around the table and began to eat the bread… At each setting there was a slip of paper and a pen. On the paper it simply read, ‘What would you do for four months wages?’ People were asked to write an answer while they waited for the evening to formally begin. (Online source)

When the evening gathering finally rolled forward Rollins says, “a young man, who was sitting in a dark corner of the room, brought everyone to silence by singing ‘Until the End of the World’ by U2 (a song describing a conversation between Judas and Jesus).” Then began a series of four readings by “Judas” around the themes (in order of appearance), “I have betrayed, I have been betrayed, I have been misguided, I have been faithful.”

Frankly, I do not recommend that you listen to the first three profanity-laced readings. I only draw this to your attention in order for you to be able to see for yourself, not only the Emergent deconstruction of who Judas actually was, but of the genuine Christian faith itself by wolves is sheep’s clothing like Peter Rollins et al. The fourth audio clip in this Easter commemoration of the “faithfulness” of Judas is “performed” by Rollins himself.

It’s pretty revealing in that there we learn… um—well—unlearn, that Judas “was the most beloved of all the disciples”; as well as “the most faithful,” who “could have equaled Abraham in every way” and was even called by God “to surpass him” by demonstrating “a level of commitment and faith never before seen by humanity.” Such as it goes when the blind guides usher you into the void of Emergence and onto that broad road which leads to destruction…
