A Southern Baptist leader who is part of a task force that was recently set up to move the denomination toward a missional resurgence has been hard at work dispelling myths about the panel’s work.

The latest rumor Dr. Daniel Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, threw out was: “The Great Commission Resurgence is actually a grand Calvinist plot to infiltrate the Southern Baptist Convention and gain control or at least greater influence in the Convention.”

“This may be my favorite of all the myths. The wild imaginations that have produced it are a wonder to behold,” he wrote on his website… (Online source)

A regular reader of Apprising Ministries knows that I’ve been a Southern Baptist pastor since 1994. It’s also no secret that I’ve been very critical of what I sometimes call the SBC, as in Slowly Becoming Catholic. That’s why as it concerns, “The Great Commission Resurgence is actually a grand Calvinist plot to infiltrate the Southern Baptist Convention and gain control or at least greater influence in the Convention,” when I placed this post up at AM’s sister outreach Christian Research Network I made the following comment:

Extremely unlikely considering the pretending to be Protestant SBC is largely a prisoner of pragmatism.

Later a fellow SBC pastor, who likes to write me once and a while to keep me on my toes, wondered if I was somehow saying if one wasn’t a 5pt. Calvinist then he wasn’t a Protestant. Later he would write to tell me that as he thought about it some more he had realized that I wasn’t saying the SBC were pretending to be Protestant because they weren’t pushing Calvinism as he remembered that my “protest (no pun intended)” was that many in the SBC promote Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism. So I thought that it would be important to clarify here what I told this SBC pastor.

Now let’s consider the following: In the largest Protestant denomination in the US we have Rick Warren, one the SBC’s most prominent pastors, openly teaching that the Roman Catholic Church is in the family of God (contra Reformation); entire state SBC conventions are promoting the contemplative teachings (contra Reformation) of Living Spiritual Teacher and Quaker mystic Richard Foster and his spiritual twin Dallas Willard, as well as encouraging SBCers to learn Lectio Divina (contra Reformation) from the “insightful book The Sacred Way” by heretical Emergent Church theologian Tony Jones.

Taking all of this lunacy in the Lord’s Name into account as a former Roman Catholic, then yes; I personally think that “Protestant” has largely lost any real meaning when it comes to the Southern Baptist Convention.
