TOZER AND SPURGEON: MEN OF GOD TOLL ON ROB BELL
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Aug 19, 2008 in Current Issues, Emergent Church, Rob Bell
To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. (Isaiah 8:20, NASB)
Contemplative And Jewish Mysticism Not Part Of Genuine Christianity
In Rob Bell In A Nutshell: The Bible here at Apprising Ministries we showed from his own lips and writings that Emerging Church pastor and icon Rob Bell does not speak according to the Law and the Testimony when he denies the proper Biblical doctrine expressed as sola Scriptura. Then in Rob Bell and Karl Barth you will see Bell’s highly subjective approach to Scripture is neo-orthodox (at best).
And finally, in Rob Bell In A Nutshell: Contemplative Mysticism we also showed you that Bell, a major spokesman for the postliberal cult of the Emergent Church, does not speak according to the Law and the Testimony when he practices and encourages Contemplative/Centering Prayer at the corrupt heart of the Contemplative Spirituality/Mysticism, which flowered in the antibiblical monastic traditions of apostate Roman Catholicism.
There’s also no question that Bell is also known for his out of balance love of ancient unregenerate rabbis of the third centuries, which he then—with much pure conjecture—reads back into the first. So, with the above clear for all those who are not under the Spell of Rob Bell it’s interesting now to consider what the two men of God to follow have to say.
First, A.W. Tozer from his book Tragedy in the Church: The Missing Gifts:
Filling church pulpits every week are some who are using only natural abilities and special training. Some are known as Bible expositors, for it is possible to read and study commentaries and then repeat what has been learned about the Scriptures. Yes, it may shock you, but it is true that anyone able to talk fluently can learn to use religious phrases and can become recognized as a preacher. (21)
And then there is the following from Charles Spurgeon who stood so tall against the original Cult of Liberal Theology in the Downgrade Controversy in stark contrast to the gelatinous jokers passing for leadership within evanjellyfish during this New Downgrade no-controversy.
For those who think that the Church has not seen the Emergent rebellion against the Bible before then consider below how Charles Spurgeon loudly rings against the mystic musings of quasi-universalist Rob Bell:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.
In Him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the Light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
(John 1:1-5, KJV)
Jesus Christ is the true Light in opposition to the smoking flax of tradition. Listen to those rabbis! They think themselves the light of the world. Their sophism is an endless strife of words; their research is not with your study; their knowledge is not worth the knowing.
They can tell you exactly which is the middle verse of the Bible and which is the middle letter of the middle word. They discussed their paradoxes till they became addle-headed. They refined their subtleties till doctrine dwindled down into doubt; simple Truth was degraded into silly twaddle; their translations of Scripture were a travesty, and their commentaries an outrage upon commonsense.
But Christ, the true, the heavenly Light, extinguishes all your earthly luminaries. The Jewish rabbi, the Greek philosopher, the ecclesiastical father, and the modern theological thinker are meteors that dissolve into mist. They make void the Word of God through their traditions or their conjectures. Believe what Jesus said, and what His Apostles taught, and what you have revealed to you in His Own pure Word—Christ is the true Light. (At the Master’s Feet, May 4)
