THE EMERGING CHURCH: “THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?”
By Ken Silva pastor-teacher on Jul 2, 2007 in Emergent Church
In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval.
(1 Corinthians 11:18-19)
It’s Past Time For Divisions In The Apostatizing American Christian Church
Right in line with the post Christian Groups Split Over Atonement Theories by one of my contributors at Christian Research Net, a sister ministry to Apprising Ministries, I say again that the neo-liberal cult of the Emergent Church is not a move of the completely sovereign LORD God Almighty of the Bible.
Hello! The fact that this whole neo-orthodox semi-pelagian and highly ecumenical emerging church movement attacks our ability to understand the Bible ought to be enough to awaken the Rip Van Winkles within leadership positions in nearly comatose $evangelicalism$. By the way Ingrid Schlueter of Slice of Laodicea has made some salient comments concerning these issues as well in her piece Conference Splits Over the Atonement.
You need to remember that prior to the Terranova Project of Leadership Network circa 1997 there was no emerging church movement and so it also springs from the same rotten root as that collection of assorted apostates known as Emergent Village. And an entire year ago I actually wrote an article called “Evangelicals” Attacking The Atonement so this is really nothing new at all.
Yet I warn you today that you had best begin to study exactly why you believe what you believe. You know oddly enough this is advice Dr. Walter Martin once gave to those of us who do counter-cult evangelism. Only now I offer this very same advice concerning these apostate leaders within the Emergent Church such as Rob Bell and Guru Brian McLaren. I for one am man enough to tell you this much with certainty, they absolutely do not preach the same Gospel I preach.
So either they have the right Gospel of Jesus Christ or I do, there is NO middle ground and I will not apologize for saying so. With all of this in mind, it is with pleasure that I refer you to Pyromaniacs where today Phil Johnson has written a very important post:
In a January CT article titled “Five Streams of the Emerging Church,” Scot Mcknight [sic] suggests that emerging Christians tend to be more praxis-oriented than the rest of us. According to McKnight, to most in the Emerging movement, how a person lives is more important than what he or she believes… McKnight writes, “Here is an emerging, provocative way of saying it: ‘By their fruits [not their theology] you will know them.’”
But that presents a horribly misleading false dichotomy. Biblically, our theology is an important aspect of our fruit. “Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.” (2 John 9)
